Cecil Ray Cossey

Head Coach

 

Coach Cossey, a 1998 Hamburg High School graduate and member of the 1997 state runner-up team, is entering his 13th year of coaching and his 6th season as Head Coach for the Lions.

Coach Cossey is pictured with his wife, Misty, who is the librarian at Noble/Allbritton Elementary in Hamburg, and their three daughers: Hannah (10), Hayley (10), and Sarah Beth (8).

In his five seasons at Hamburg, the Lions have a record of 42-21 including 6 playoff wins. Coach Cossey has helped lead the Lions to playoff appearances in each of his first 5 seasons.

The 2016 team was the first group of Lions to advance to the third round of the playoffs since 1997. The 2016 Lions were also the second team in Coach Cossey's tenure to break the school record for points in a season. The 2016 Lions scored a total of 472 points breaking the previous record of 416 points scored by the 2014 Lions.

He began his coaching career at South Garland High School, under former Lions Head Coach Mickey Moss, where they advanced into at the least the second round of the playoffs each year. Coach Cossey then coached under Bill Timmons, another former Lions Head Coach, at Hot Springs High School where they won two state weightlifting championships. He spent four years in Louisiana at Parkway High School in Bossier City and Northwood High School in Shreveport. He was a part of the first playoff win in Parkway history and helped lead Northwood to its first back to back district championships, as well as the first playoff win in over 10 years.

At both stops in Louisiana, Coach Cossey also helped break school records on offense for points scored in a season.

Richard Griffith

Offensive Coordinator

Quarterbacks

Coach Griffith is entering his first year with the Lions and will serve as the Offensive Coordinator.

He is a graduate of Greene County Tech High School in Paragould, AR, where he was a member of the winningest class in GCT Football History as well as a part of the first playoff win in school history.

Coach Griffith graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education from Arkansas State University, where he was a member of the 2011 Sunbelt Conference Championship Team as a player and later served as an Undergraduate Assistant with Red Wolves Defense.

After graduation, Coach Griffith worked as a Quality Control Coach for the Louisiana Tech University Bulldogs Football team, which won its 5th straight Bowl Game against the University of Hawaii Warriors in the 2018 SoFi Hawaii Bowl. While there, Coach Griffith worked with the Wide Receivers and assisted with the Special Teams.

Mike Lloyd

Defensive Coordinator

Defensive Line

Coach Lloyd enters his 6th year at Hamburg. He has 31 years experience at four different schools: Camden Fairview, Hooks, Texas, Texarkana, and Hamburg. Coach Lloyd is also the Lions Head baseball coach.

A native of Crossett, Lloyd is a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Monticello and earned a Masters at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. He played baseball in college at Garden City Community College in Kansas and at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, earning All-AIC honors.

Lloyd is married to the former Julie Ann Brandon of West Monroe, Louisiana. They have four children: Brandon (25), Jason (21), Chris (17), and Lindsey (17).

Caleb Morgan

Offensive Line

Strength and Conditioning Coordinator

Coach Morgan returns for his 5th season in Hamburg. A native of Dermott, he attended high school at Monticello where he fell in love with football and weight lifting. Coach Morgan played college football at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, where he rotated snaps at both center and guard. He graduated in 2013 with a bachelors in PE and Health.

His previous experience includes two years at Wynne High School for a combined 23-5 record, and a 5A State Runner-up season. Prior to Wynne, he volunteered for four years at Monticello, where he helped lead the Billies to their 2009 State Championship.

Coach Morgan is joined by his wife, Lauren, who is an instructor of Biology Labs at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.

Darrick Tucker

Linebackers

Coach Tucker returns for his 6th season with the Lions, his 3nd as the linebackers coach. He also serves as the Head softball coach.

He is a graduate of Hamburg High School. He was also a member of the 1997 Hamburg Lion conference championship and state runner-up football team.

Coach Tucker graduated from the University of Arkansas at Monticello with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education.

Coach Tucker is pictured with his wife, Tai, and their two children: Quin and Ciara.

Shawn Mattice

Wide Receivers

Shawn Mattice will be entering his 3rd year at Hamburg and his 2nd year on the senior high staff.

He is a 2004 graduate of Bastrop High School where he played on the offensive line. He was a 4 year letterman on the baseball team where he led the conference in batting average his senior year.

Mattice was an assistant baseball coach for Bastrop High School for 2 years.

Mattice graduated from the University of Louisiana at Monroe with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration in 2015. He is currently enrolled in the MAT program at Grand Canyon University.

Shawn’s girlfriend, Alyson Dawson, is also a teacher for Hamburg School District. She is currently a Pre-K teacher.

Devin Cecil

Defensive Backs

Special Teams Co-coordinator

Coach Cecil enters his 5th year with the Hamburg Lions, and his third coaching Defensive Backs.

He is from Hamburg where he was a 3 year starter and letterman for the Lion football team, a 4 year starter and letterman for the baseball team, and earned all-conference honors in both sports his senior year of 2006.

He graduated from the University of Arkansas at Monticello in 2013 with a Bachelors of General Studies, majoring in Health and Physical Education while minoring in Natural Science. He has since added Middle School Science and Middle School Social Studies to his license.

Coach Cecil and his wife, Brittany, have been married for two years. Brittany teaches Elementary P.E. at Noble/Allbritton in Hamburg and at Portland Elementary. The Cecils have a son, Easton, who will be 2 years old in November.

Logan Morris

Running Backs and Tight Ends

Volunteer

Coach Morris enters his 1st year with the Hamburg Lions as a volunteer coach helping with the running backs and tight ends.

He is a former Hamburg Lion and graduated in 2014. Coach Morris then went on to start for the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers at tight end where his team earned three GAC titles and played in the GAC Division II Playoffs two consecutive years.

Coach Morris received his BA in Business and Marketing and works for Morris Transportation. He is married to Tori Hartley Morris who cheered for the Lions and also graduated in 2014. They are both proud to be part of the Hamburg Lion family.

Gene Barnes

Defensive Line

Volunteer

Coach Barnes is entering his third year as a volunteer coach helping with the defensive line.

He graduated from Hamburg in 1995. He went on to play football at The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) for three years. Redshirting the first year and lettering the next two. His final two seasons he played at Delta State University lettering both years and graduating with a degree in business.

Gene’s wife is Julie Sessions Barnes and they have one son Bruin Barnes.

Spencer Hartley

Junior High

Head Coach

Coach Hartley is entering his first year with the Lions and will serve as the Head Junior High Coach. He has spent the past three seasons coaching for the Poyen Indians.

He graduated from Hamburg in 2010 after starting and lettering for the football team for 3 years.

He graduated from the University of Arkansas at Monticello in 2014 with a Bachelors of Science in Biology and a minor in Earth Science. He received his Masters of Arts in Teaching from the University of Arkansas at Monticello in 2016.

Coach Hartley’s wife is currently employed at Taylor Elementary in the White Hall School District as a third grade teacher. They have two children, Ellisyn who will be 4 in October and Camden who just turned 1 in May.

Jacob Holland

Junior High

Assistant Coach

Coach Holland is entering his 2nd year with the Lions and will serve as the Defensive Coordinator for the Junior High.

A native of White Hall, he attended high school at White Hall where he loved to play baseball and football. He graduated from high school in 2012 and went on to the University of Arkansas at Monticello where he achieved a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. He is currently in graduate school at the University of Arkansas at Monticello where he will graduate from the MAT program in December of 2019.

Coach Holland is joined by his girlfriend, Hannah Brockwell of Crossett. She is a kindergarten teacher in El Dorado School District and is entering her first year of teaching.
